About MacCoubrey Funeral Home in Colborne, Ontario
Rexford F MacCoubrey (my grandfather) found employment with the local undertaker and furniture store in 1938 at the end of the Great Depression. He was not so much attracted to the business as to the fact that the funeral home paid a few cents more an hour than the hardware store where he was employed.
After working for a number of different owners, in 1961, he along with his son, my father Robert (Bob), purchased the funeral home from Clifford Bowes. Bob grew the business and purchased the Colborne funeral home in 1976. Substantial additions and renovations have been made to the two facilities over the years. The most recent being a 1500 sq foot reception centre.
The services provided to our community include pre-planning funeral and memorial services, estate assistance and bereavement support. We are introducing a new service that we are calling Palliative Counselling. Families will be supported by trained palliative specialists that will help guide people through their final days.
Our cremation/merchandise offerings includes a large selection of urns, jewelry, DNA bank and Parting Stone. The later a patented process that turns cremated remains into porcelain like stones that you can hold and share.
Our relationship with Union Cemetery, Cobourg and St. James Cemetery, Roseneath, enables us to offer ecco friendly, green burials.
As a family business, we have always believed in supporting the community. My father was a major factor in the building of the local library and the building of a new hospital. I have been the fund- raising chair of the Northumberland United Way, walked in high healed shoes for 12 consecutive years to raise money for the local women’s shelter as well as running an auction during our hospital galas. My latest endeavour is volunteering for the local mass COVID vaccination clinic. You can find me there, supervising a crew of volunteers in an attempt to crush the virus.
